Heavy industrial machinery transport in Europe
How to organise heavy industrial machinery transport in Europe: specialised vehicles, securing, weight regulations and route planning.
The challenges of machinery transport
An 8-tonne lathe, a 12-tonne press, an industrial air conditioning unit, a compressor, a generator. Each piece of machinery has different weight, dimensions and fragility. Road transport requires the right vehicle, correct securing and a planned route.
The most common mistake is underestimating preparation. A poorly secured machine can shift during transport, getting damaged and compromising safety. Italfrance has managed this type of shipment since 2011, with direct experience on heavy and bulky goods.
Vehicles for machinery transport
The choice of vehicle depends on the weight, dimensions and loading method of the machinery. Not all semi-trailers are suitable.
- Fixed flatbed semi-trailer: for standard-sized machinery, loadable by forklift or overhead crane
- Lowbed semi-trailer: for very tall machinery that needs to reduce the total load height
- Curtainside semi-trailer: for machinery that must be protected from weather
- Extendable semi-trailer: for very long machinery
Securing and protection
European regulations (EN 12195) define how to calculate the restraining forces needed based on load mass. In practice: every machine must be anchored to the deck with straps, chains or tensioners of sufficient number and capacity to prevent any movement.
Delicate components such as control panels, electronic systems or actuators must be protected with padding and waterproof covers. In some cases it is worth building a custom wooden crate. The cost of the crate is always less than the cost of damage.
- Ratchet straps rated for the actual load
- Chains for very heavy machinery (over 5 tonnes per piece)
- Wedges and wooden blocks under the machinery base
- Waterproof protection for electronic components
- Custom wooden crates for machinery with fragile components
Weight regulations
The maximum total weight allowed for an articulated vehicle in Europe is 40 tonnes (44 on 5 axles in some countries). The payload capacity of a standard semi-trailer is about 24 tonnes. For a lowbed it drops to 20-22 tonnes due to the heavier chassis.
If the machinery exceeds these limits, out-of-gauge transport permits are required. Processing times vary from 24 hours to 2 weeks depending on the country. Each country crossed requires a separate permit.
Route planning
For heavy machinery, the route must be checked in advance. Bridge and underpass heights, weight limits on secondary roads, time restrictions for heavy vehicles in urban centres. A planning error can block the transport mid-route.
For routes from Puglia to France, Belgium, the Netherlands, Spain and Luxembourg, we know the roads and the limitations. We plan every machinery transport with enough lead time to avoid problems.
How to request a quote
For a quote on industrial machinery transport, we need: exact machinery weight, dimensions (length x width x height), collection point, destination and available loading method (forklift, overhead crane, ramp).
