Marble and ceramics transport: how to ship safely

How to organise marble, ceramics and tile transport in Europe. Suitable vehicles, correct packaging, weight regulations and practical tips.

Why marble and ceramics require special attention

Marble is heavy, fragile and expensive. A damaged slab cannot be repaired: it must be replaced. Ceramics and tiles are equally fragile: impacts, vibrations and jolts can cause breaks or chips that make the product unsellable.

Puglia is one of Italy's main districts for marble and stone processing. Bisceglie, Trani and the Murgia area are extraction and processing zones that export to France, Belgium, the Netherlands and Spain. Italfrance has been transporting these materials every week since 2011.

Suitable vehicles

Not all trucks are suitable for marble and ceramics. The load floor must be stable and the vehicle must have anchoring systems adequate for the high specific weight of these materials.

  • Flatbeds and semi-trailers: ideal for marble slabs on trestles (A-frame), raw blocks and heavy pallets
  • Curtainside semi-trailers: for packaged ceramics, tiles in boxes or on wrapped pallets
  • Anchoring systems: straps, tensioners, pallet stoppers. Mandatory to prevent shifting during braking or turning
  • Reinforced side boards: for concentrated loads requiring lateral containment

Correct packaging for ceramics and tiles

Packaging is the first defence against damage. For ceramics, the material must absorb impacts and protect surfaces from scratches. For marble, slabs must be kept in a vertical or sub-vertical position on metal trestles.

A well-prepared tile pallet withstands transport without issues. A poorly prepared pallet can suffer damage even on a perfect road.

  • Stretch film over the entire pallet surface
  • Corrugated cardboard between tile layers
  • Protective corner guards in cardboard or plastic
  • Tensioning straps to secure the load
  • Reinforced wooden pallets for weights over 1,000 kg

Weight limits and regulations

Marble is among the densest goods transported by road. One cubic metre of marble weighs about 2,700 kg. A load of slabs easily reaches the semi-trailer's 24-tonne payload capacity before filling all available space.

The maximum total weight for an articulated vehicle in Europe is 40 tonnes (44 tonnes on 5 axles in some countries). Maximum axle weight ranges between 10 and 11.5 tonnes. These limits must be respected to avoid fines and vehicle damage.
