Marble and ceramics transport in Europe: how to ship safely
Guide to transporting marble, ceramics and tiles to Europe. Suitable vehicles, packaging, regulations and tips for shipping safely from southern Italy.
Marble and ceramics transport: the specifics
Marble, ceramics and tiles are fragile and heavy goods that require specific care during transport. Incorrect load positioning or inadequate packaging can cause breakage, scratches or damage that compromises the entire value of the shipment.
Italy is the world's leading producer of fine marble and ceramics. Regions such as Puglia, Sicily, Tuscany and Veneto export millions of euros worth of these materials to European and international markets every year.
Vehicles and equipment for marble transport
Not all vehicles are suitable for transporting marble and ceramics. The key features required are load floor stability, the presence of anchorage systems and the capacity to support the high specific weight of these materials.
- Fixed flatbeds and semi-trailers: ideal for marble slabs on trestles, raw blocks and palletised materials
- Curtainside semi-trailers: for packaged ceramics and tiles in boxes or on pallets
- Vehicles with reinforced side boards: for very heavy and concentrated loads
- Vehicles with anchorage systems (straps, tensioners, pallet stoppers): to prevent shifting during transit
How to correctly package ceramics and tiles
Packaging is the first line of defence against transport damage. For ceramics and tiles, packaging material must be able to absorb shocks and protect surfaces from scratching.
Marble slabs are generally transported on metal trestles (A-frames) that keep them in a vertical or sub-vertical position, reducing the risk of breakage compared to a horizontal position.
- Reinforced wooden pallets with corner protectors
- Polyethylene film (stretch wrap) to protect surfaces
- Corrugated cardboard interspersed between tiles
- Expanded polystyrene or mineral wool to cushion impacts
- Tensioning straps to secure the load on the pallet
Main routes: from Puglia to Europe
Puglia is a leading production district for marble and ceramics. Bisceglie, Trani and Altamura are among the main marble processing centres in Puglia, while Matera and the Lucanian area produce high-quality stone materials exported throughout Europe.
From Bisceglie, Italfrance S.r.l. serves France, Belgium, the Netherlands, Spain and Luxembourg with weekly departures. Transporting marble and ceramics to northern Europe is one of our specialities, with consolidated experience in handling this type of cargo.
Weights, dimensions and regulations
Transporting stone and ceramic materials requires attention to the weight limits imposed by European regulations. The maximum total weight allowed for an articulated vehicle in Europe is 40 tonnes (44 t on 5 axles in some countries), with a maximum axle weight ranging between 10 and 11.5 tonnes.
For exceptional transport — large raw marble blocks or oversized slabs — specific permits are required for each country crossed. Italfrance S.r.l. manages obtaining these permits as part of the service.
